Your next Wellbeing Audit. Seven things to look for when choosing yours…

Workplace wellbeing is starting to get its own healthcheck, and that is no bad thing.  Here’s what to look for when choosing your next Wellbeing Audit.

Ever since the HSE introduced their Management Standards in the early 2000s wellbeing has slowly been working its way up the corporate agenda.

However, whilst the introduction of stress/ resilience/ wellbeing initiatives are typically brought in with good intentions, their presence can sometimes be as a result of reacting to something going wrong, i.e. COVID-19 or feeling that we should respond to the latest wellbeing trend. The compound effect of this can result in a wellbeing offering that isn’t sufficiently joined up, covering all the bases, or suitably signposted.  It can also result in too much focus at the individual rather than the organisational level, or on symptoms, rather than causes.

This is where the Wellbeing Audit comes in. A chance to identify what is effective and what isn’t working, a good audit will identify potential risks or blind spots in your current offering, as well as opportunities for improvement yet to be discovered. Here’s what to look for when commissioning your next wellbeing audit:

  1. A multi-method approach, i.e., more than a survey

  2. Assesses wellbeing at an organisational, department/ team and individual level

  3. Gathers both qualitative and quantitative data

  4. Provides clear feedback on what is and isn’t working, highlight risks and provide clear recommendations

  5. Underpinned by an open and collaborative approach

  6. Informed by a clear methodology, framework or system based on the latest research and best practice

  7. Is truly independent, i.e., not run by those responsible for your wellbeing offering. This could be drawing on the services of your Audit department, if you have one, or an external provider

Better@Work.

At Psychology Works, our approach to Wellbeing Audits is based on our deceptively simple Better@Work Model, a simple but innovative framework for building better business performance through wellbeing.

Designed to support both diagnosis and solution generation, it can be used to tackle both symptoms and causes and work effectively at an individual, team and organisational level. Equally important, it emphasises shared ownership and responsibility for wellbeing between the individual and the business.

The nature of the framework also means that it has the flexibility to be used for supporting the creation of holistic end-to-end interventions, or integrate with existing wellbeing initiatives. It helps businesses understand their relative areas of strength, development and risk across the four areas, and where needed, provide the framework for focusing effort into one or two critical areas- which makes it ideal for use an a framework for Wellbeing Audits.
